If poorly executed, planned shuts can reduce operational stability and campaign length, as well as become a significant source of injuries. Due to these high associated costs, it's essential that planned shuts are both effective and highly efficient. At first, I really was not convinced that Partners in Performance would be able to help us. I had experts look at the shutdown critical path for months and I was not sure how Partners in Performance, in a few days, would be able to take time or cost out without jeopardising safety. Through their process, we managed to reduce both the time of the critical path and the projected cost of the shut. The Milestone Tracking tool allows everyone to have ownership of their actions and is visible to the whole team, so it’s become an effective tool to manage the preparation for the shutdown. The reduction in break-in work being generated within the 4-week deadline before the start of the shutdown, from 50% of all work in the plan, to less than 10% of all work in the plan, has made the planning much easier to do too.
